This EYFS SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) Refugee themed unit of work is based on Something Else by Kathryn Cave. A simple story, about a small creature who does his best to join in with the others. But he’s different. No matter how he tries, he just doesn’t belong.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills from Development Matters. Opportunities to develop reading and communication and language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery Skills:

3- and 4-year-olds

  • Use some of their print and letter knowledge in their early writing

Children in reception

  • Form lower case letters correctly
  • Write short sentences with words with known sound-letter correspondence
  • Spell words by identifying the sounds and then writing the sound with letter/s
