Our Environment collection of units is designed to inspire children, through their writing in English, to explore environmental issues. Pupils will learn about the impact of pollution, ocean plastic and our impact on the planet.

• EYFS – Clem and Crab: 3- and 4-year-olds: To sequence images from the story and use them to re-tell the start middle and end. Children in reception: To orally retell the story. To write a letter to another class encouraging them to put litter in the bin/take it home when they visit the beach and explain why this is important.
• Year 1 – Somebody Swallowed Stanley: To write information about the sea animals looked at in the texts.
• Year 2 – Tidy: Write a persuasive letter in role to protect the environment.
• Year 3 – Amazing Rivers: Create text for an information board, designed to give visitors information and persuade them to look after our waterways.
• Year 4 – Alba The Hundred Year Old Fish: To write an information board for an exhibit in an aquarium.
• Year 5 – The Brilliant Deep: Write an information leaflet to inform people about coral reefs with a persuasion to ask people to care for the environment.
• Year 6 – Plastic Planet: How Plastic Came to Rule the World: To write a persuasive speech campaigning for the reduction in plastic waste to an audience of peers.

All of the Environment units comprise 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. They contain opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language. These skills are woven throughout the units.
