Our ‘Shakespeare’ collection of units is designed to share the works of one of our greatest writers and to foster a love of his stories. A focus on spoken language skills will ensure pupils are able to perform their written work to an audience.

• EYFS – Romeosuarus and Juliet Rex: 3- and 4-year-olds: To sequence images depicting key events in the story and use the images to retell the basic storyline. Children in reception: To rewrite the story.
• Year 1 – Lit for Little Hands: A Midsummer Night’s Dream: To write a character description based on the character that they have designed.
• Year 2 – Usborne Young Reading: The Tempest: Re-tell an abridged version of the story.
• Year 3 – A Stage full of Shakespeare Stories: The Merchant of Venice: Write a guide for visiting The Globe Theatre in London.
• Year 4 – A Stage full of Shakespeare Stories: Julius Caesar: To write a playscript for part of the story.
• Year 5 – Bold and Brave Women from Shakespeare: To write and perform a soliloquy (monologue) in role as one of Shakespeare’s characters.
• Year 6 – Poetry for Kids: William Shakespeare: To write a sonnet as a goodbye to a teacher, a friend or the primary school itself.

All of the Shakespeare units comprise 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. They contain opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language. These skills are woven throughout the units.
