This year 1 SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) Refugee themed unit of work is based on Beegu by Alexis Deacon. Beegu tells the story of a friendly little creature that is not supposed to be on Earth, and she is lost. She explores her surroundings and finds that the BIG people on Earth are not very welcoming but the little ones, the children, are a different matter.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. Opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery skills:

  • Join words and clauses using and
  • Punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark
  • Add suffixes where no change is needed to the root word e.g. -ed, -ing, -er, -est

Short writing opportunities:

  • Letter
  • Postcard
  • Message
  • Story
