This year 1 unit of work is based on The Koala who Could by Rachel Bright. Kevin the koala doesn’t like change. One day he is faced with change despite doing everything he can to avoid it. Kevin spends time clinging to his tree and is supported by his friends to try something new.

This reading unit comprises 6 weeks of whole class reading sessions, focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity for the practise of prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference.

This reading unit also includes 6 fully resourced lessons around the core theme of personal, social and emotional development as part of the PHSCE curriculum.

This unit can be used individually or as part of a whole-school themed project on well-being with our other units on this theme.

Please note, the core Pathways to Read unit that uses this text is slightly different to this ‘Well-being’ themed unit.

Mastery skills:

  • Be encouraged to link what they read or hear read to their own experiences
  • Explain clearly their understanding of what is being read to them
  • Retell key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales, and consider their characteristics

Resources: PowerPoints, lesson planning and abridged methodology.
