This year 2 unit of work is based on The Tree Keepers by Gemma Koomen. Sylvia lives among the Tree Keepers but she would rather spend time alone than with the other noisy children. When she finds and befriends a baby bird, she starts to realise how good friendship and company can be. Eventually, she learns the strength of community and finds her place within it.

This reading unit comprises 6 weeks of whole class reading and grouped reading sessions, focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity for the practise of prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference and word choice.

This reading unit also includes 6 fully resourced lessons around the core theme of personal, social and emotional development as part of the PHSCE curriculum.

This unit can be used individually or as part of a whole-school themed project on well-being with our other units on this theme.

Please note, the core Pathways to Read unit that uses this text is slightly different to this ‘Well-being’ themed unit.
