This year 2 Environment themed unit of work is based on Tidy by Emily Gravett. Pete the badger lives in the forest and likes to keep it neat and tidy. The problem is that he doesn’t know when to stop! Find out what happens when his tidiness goes too far and the effect it has on his environment and friends.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. Opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery skills:

  • Add -er and -est to adjectives
  • Use homophones and near homophones
  • Use subordination (if, that)
  • Use punctuation correctly – apostrophes for contracted forms

Short writing opportunities:

  • Lists/notes
  • Instructions
  • Letters/messages
  • Poetry
  • Diary
  • Fact sheets about badgers

Resources: PowerPoints, Lesson plans and abridged methodology.
