This year 6 Environment themed unit of work is based on Plastic Planet: How Plastic Came to Rule the World by Georgia Amson-Bradshaw, and also requires Greta’s Story: The Schoolgirl Who Went on Strike to Save The Planet by Valentina Camerini.
Plastic Planet: How Plastic Came to Rule the World is a highly informative text that explores how plastic has become a widespread and dangerous problem and looks ahead to possible solutions to the plastic crisis. This unit uses an additional text to share a second viewpoint on the theme – Greta’s Story: The Schoolgirl Who Went on Strike to Save The Planet, which tells the true story of the young eco-activist whose persistence sparked a global movement.
The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. Opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language skills are also woven throughout the unit.
This unit can be used individually or as part of a whole-school themed project on Environment with our other units on this theme.
