This is a shared reading unit of work to support Y6 revision towards the KS2 reading test. It is based around the spell-binding book ‘Brightstorm’ by Vashti Hardy.

Brightstorm is the story of twins, Arthur and Maudie, who set off on an adventure to South Polaris, following in their father’s footsteps…in an attempt to save their family’s reputation.

This unit builds skills required for the Y6 reading test through an engaging text with links to poetry and non-fiction using a whole-class shared reading approach across 9 fully resourced sessions.

Reading Skills:

  • Predict what might happen from details stated and implied
  • Give and explain the meaning of words in context
  • Retrieve and record information or identify key details from fiction and non-fiction
  • Summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph
  • Make inferences from the text, explain and justify inference with evidence from the text
  • Identify or explain how information or narrative content is related and contributes to meaning
  • Identify and explain how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases
  • Make comparisons within and across texts

Final Outcome:

  • To write a character profile for Arthur, Maudie or Mistress Poacher making comparisons to other characters in the book.
