This year 6 Black Lives themed unit of work is based on The Place for Me: Stories About the Windrush Generation by Dame Floella Benjamin, K. N. Chimbiri and E. L. Norry.

The Place for Me: Stories About the Windrush Generation is an anthology of inspiring stories telling the real experiences of Black British people from the Windrush Generation; a glorious celebration of how immigrants to Britain have enriched British life and culture.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. Opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery Skills:

• Use expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely
• Use passive verbs
• Link ideas across paragraphs using a wider range of cohesive devices
• Integrate dialogue to convey character and advance the action
