Christleton – Pathways to Read – Case Study

About the school: Community Primary school located on the outskirts of Chester

Number of classes: 7

Number on roll: 214

The Challenge:

As a school, we decided to embed the Pathways to Read scheme as we valued the fact that the scheme was fully backed by research and followed a mastery approach. In addition to this, having successfully embedded the Pathways to Write programme across school, we were keen to use the Pathways to Read as the texts linked closely and would support the children with their writing skills in addition to reading skills.

Mastery Approach:

The Pathways to Read programme has positively impacted the children and their attitudes to reading. Through pupil voice, children comment that they like the structure of Pathways to Read sessions and identify that exploration of vocabulary prior to reading strengthens their understanding of the texts that they read. Furthermore, children across all year groups talk positively about the high-quality texts used throughout the programme and the fact that they are provided with time to explore and predict what might happen in the texts. As a school, we strongly value the effective progression of the programme and the links created with our RWI programme whereby children initially focus on their decoding skills before extending to a greater focus on reading comprehension.

The Impact:

Since implementing Pathways to Read, teacher confidence in delivering reading skills has improved significantly. The four-part structure of lessons has ensured consistency in the delivery of reading across school and in turn, teachers’ subject knowledge. As the sessions are well-resourced, this has significantly reduced teacher workload (which has been highlighted positively through teacher-voice).

Embedding Pathways to Read across our school has had such a positive impact on both our children’s enjoyment of reading and teacher workload and subject knowledge. The programme was simple to implement across school and The Literacy Company were always on hand if any aspects required clarifying. We adore the fact that both Pathways to Read and Pathways to Write link seamlessly together and this has really supported the children to develop a deeper understanding. The high-quality texts that are offered through the scheme are incredible and we love the diverse range of texts available.
