Why the Literacy Company?

Developing supportive collaboration across multiple settings required a moderation process that was going to be robust yet equitable and transparent. As a trust we felt that previous work with The Literacy Company had promoted these values. Successful support in one of the primary schools within our trust had demonstrated this so we felt highly assured that this model would work across multiple schools in a supportive and collaborative manner that aligned with the trust values.

How has moderation support impacted on teachers’ understanding of standards and on consistency and accuracy of judgements across schools?

The moderation process has empowered the open dialogue between colleagues within and across the primaries. It has facilitated an openness of professional sharing of best practice, alignment of areas of the curriculum from practitioners up to trust level and has fostered highly effective, respected professional relationships across the schools.

Staff are developing confidence to adapt planning to meet the arising needs of pupils and seeking support from other more experienced colleagues when they require support with this. Staff have really valued the time during the school day to facilitate the moderation and have openly expressed how they feel that this is beneficial professional development. Staff developing and widening subject knowledge is now being shared across the trust and within schools more widely and this is leading to a greater understanding of the development of writing and end points across the primary phase.

How has your moderation cluster impacted on cross-phase transition?

As a trust we have developed with The Literacy Company purposeful and developmental cross phase moderation at all end points – EY-Y1/across all year groups within the primary phase and Year 6/Year 7 transition moderation. This has been extremely valuable in ensuring end points are agreed and as such start points are clearly identified to ensure learning is maximised. Again, this has fostered professional relationships that are supportive of ongoing subject knowledge and support networks.

What would you say to other schools considering cluster moderation sessions?

The bespoke moderation model that we have devised with The Literacy Company over time is a model that we have now replicated for maths moderation.

Moderation outcomes then lead into subject lead network meetings to support subject leaders addressing the effective implementation of any arising areas of development – within school/trust-wide. The responsive and supportive manner of The Literacy Company ensures that implementation is timely and highly effective.

From a cost perspective – as it is partnered with high quality professional development of subject knowledge for all staff and subject leads – it is excellent value for money. The model and process is enabling us, as a trust, to develop consistency of assessment across a range of schools/phases and driving outcomes and consistency in all of the schools.

‘As a trust, we felt that previous work with The Literacy Company had promoted these values. Successful working on one of the primaries had demonstrated this so we felt highly assured that this model would work across multiple schools in a supportive and collaborative manner that aligned with the Trust values.’
