Whitchurch CE Junior Academy – Pathways to Read – Case Study

About the school: Whitchurch Junior CE Academy, North Shropshire, years 3 – 6.

Number of classes: 12

Number on roll: 303

The Challenge:

We chose Pathways to Read because it provided a framework of high-quality reading lessons to set a benchmark for all staff and children.

In the past, reading was inconsistently applied with pockets of good practise. A mastery approach has helped with all learners having the same diet of learning that is progressive year on year.

Mastery Approach:

Attitudes to reading are positive and pupils enjoy Pathways to Read – particularly the range of books covered.

Quality and structure of lessons has improved and data pattern has improved. Pathways to Read is also implemented in our infant school from Year 1 and runs alongside phonics for comprehension purposes.

The Impact:

Pathways to Read has reduced teacher workload in that the accompanying PowerPoints reduce preparation time, and the pre-planned sessions allow staff to adapt to meet the needs of a range of learners rather than having to plan from scratch.

The way that the scheme is structured lends confidence to teachers in that skills are built on year-by-year and the range of reading domains is covered over the course of each year.

Pathways to Read is a great resource that, with adaptation, can meet the needs of a wide range of learners. It is a great launchpad for discussion, provides a wide range of texts that cover a range of backgrounds. The scheme links closely to Pathways to Write and they enhance each other through topical theme.
