This EYFS Environment themed unit of work is based on Clem and Crab by Fiona Lumbers. Clem is an explorer. One day, she stumbles across Crab with his claw stuck in a plastic bag. The book shares the importance of cleaning up our beaches with the message that every small action helps.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills from Development Matters. Opportunities to develop reading skills and communication and language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery skills:

3- and 4-year-olds

• Use some of their print and letter knowledge in their early writing

Children in reception

• Form lower case letters correctly
• Write short sentences with words with known sound-letter correspondence
• Spell words by identifying the sounds and then writing the sound with letter/s
