This Y2 unit is based on Lights on Cotton Rock by David Litchfield. Heather is a girl who loves everything about space. When a spaceship lands at Cotton Rock, she thinks it is her chance to go and explore all the magic and wonder outer space has to offer. Will Heather leave her family behind or will she discover what she is looking for closer to home? 

This reading unit comprises 6 weeks of whole class reading and grouped reading sessions, focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity to develop pupils’ reading fluency and to practise prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills. There is also a weekly mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference or sequencing.
