This Y3 unit is based on The Thames and Tide Club by Katya Balen. The Thames and Tide Club tells the adventures of Clem and her friends as they enjoy weekend mudlarking as part of the Thames and Tide Club! One day they find something magical that belongs to the river and must be returned. They embark on a mission to save underwater London. 

These reading units comprise 6 weeks of whole class reading sessions focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity to develop pupils’ reading fluency and to practise prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of summarising, distinguishing between fact and opinion and identifying how language, structure and presentation contribute towards meaning.

• Draw inferences (inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions) and justify with evidence  

• Ask questions to improve understanding  

• Discuss words and phrases that capture the reader’s interest and imagination
