This Y4 unit is based on Ariki and the Island of Wonders by Nicola Davies. Ariki and Ipo are making the most of a beautiful day, sailing the sea near Turtle Island on a “borrowed” boat. They’re too busy daydreaming to spot the grey clouds gathering overhead – but then a terrible storm breaks, carrying them miles from home…  A nail-biting adventure with a strong message about endangered animals and human intervention.

These reading units comprise 6 weeks of whole class reading sessions focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity to develop pupils’ reading fluency and to practise prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference and author word choice.
