This year 1 Black Lives themed unit is based on Meesha Makes Friends by Tom Percival. Meesha loves making things but she finds it hard to make friends. She doesn’t know quite what to do, what to say, or when to say it. Meesha slowly learns how to make friends and communicate.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. Opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery Skills:

• Combine words to make sentences
• Leave spaces between words
• Begin to use capital letters and full stops
• Use capital letters for names of people and the personal pronoun ‘I’

Short writing opportunities:

• Character description
• Thought bubbles
• Poetry
• Diary
