This year 4 unit of work is based on Rise Up: Ordinary Kids with Extraordinary Stories by Amanda Li. A book of inspirational stories of 29 children who have overcome challenges and succeeded.

This reading unit comprises 6 weeks of whole class reading and grouped reading sessions, focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity for the practise of prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference and author word choice.

This reading unit also includes 6 fully resourced lessons around the core theme of personal, social and emotional development as part of the PHSCE curriculum.

This unit can be used individually or as part of a whole-school themed project on well-being with our other units on this theme.

Please note, the core Pathways to Read unit that uses this text is slightly different to this ‘Well-being’ themed unit.

Mastery skills:

  • Discuss words and phrases that capture the reader’s interest and imagination
  • Draw inferences (inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions); justify with evidence

Resources: PowerPoints, lesson planning, abridged methodology.
