This year 4 SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) Refugee themed unit of work is based on Wisp: A Story of Hope by Zana Fraillon. The moving story of Wisp: A Story of Hope tells the tale of Idris, a child refugee. One day, the Wisp arrives at the refugee camp and reminds the people of their lives before, helping to reawaken their hopes for freedom. However, Idris has no experience of the world beyond the refugee camp, so the Wisp gives him something else: a promise.

The unit comprises 15 sessions of English planning and focuses on mastering key writing skills (grammar, vocabulary and punctuation) from the national curriculum. Opportunities to develop reading comprehension, writing composition and spoken language skills are also woven throughout the unit.

Mastery skills:

  • Expand noun phrases by the addition of modifying adjectives, nouns and prepositional phrases
  • Choose nouns or pronouns appropriately for clarity and cohesion and to avoid repetition
  • Use inverted commas and other punctuation to punctuate direct speech
  • Use commas after fronted adverbials

Short writing opportunities:

  • Description
  • Poem
  • Comparison
  • Dialogue
  • Diary

Resources: PowerPoints, lesson planning and abridged methodology.
