The Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson tells the story of a lonely boy suffering with crippling OCD, desperate for connection. Supplementary text, Fearless: How to be your true, confident self! by Liam Hackett explores strategies to build confidence and break-free from stereotypes.

This reading unit comprises 6 weeks of whole class reading and grouped reading sessions, focusing on the teaching of key reading skills from the national curriculum. Each weekly plan provides an opportunity for the practise of prediction, clarifying of vocabulary and retrieval skills as well as having a mastery focus for explicit teaching of inference, evaluating authors’ language choices and identifying how language, structure and presentation contribute towards meaning.

This reading unit also includes 6 fully resourced lessons around the core theme of personal, social and emotional development as part of the PHSCE curriculum.

This unit can be used individually or as part of a whole-school themed project on well-being with our other units on this theme.

Please note, the core Pathways to Read unit that uses this text is slightly different to this ‘Well-being’ themed unit.

Mastery skills:

  • Draw inferences (inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions); justify with evidence
  • Evaluate authors’ language choice, including figurative language
  • Identify how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning

Resource: PowerPoints, lesson planning.
